Irish Tenor Anthony Kearns Talks Horses With Equine VIP

February 10, 2012 by EquineVIP

Anthony Kearns won “Ireland’s Search for a Tenor,” which was a national singing competition similar to America Idol. Three years later he joined The Irish Tenors and is the youngest member of the popular music group. The Irish Tenors remain one of the PBS’s most successful acts and are the second most popular musical export out of Ireland following the rock group, U2. Mr. Kearns has performed for Presidents and Prime Ministers, but took some time to speak to Equine VIP while in Kentucky to perform at a benefit for the nonprofit Equine Health and Welfare Alliance (EHWA).

Ireland is known for their beautiful horses. Did you grow up around horses?

I grew up in Wexford which is a village where a lot of people bred, raise and own show jumping horses. I learned how to muck stalls and feed the horses and especially enjoyed watching horses in the fields.

You have been quoted as saying “music and horses” are your passions. How have you been able to combine the two?

I got involved in horses again about ten years ago. I had to take time off to pursue my singing career, so horses are still a new hobby for me.

What type of horse do you own?

A friend invited me to the races and later invited me to own a “leg” of a race horse! The horse’s name was “Irish Tenor” so naturally I was interested. The horse had the look of a race horse, but unfortunately didn’t make it on the track.

Did owning a race horse and that experience disappoint you?

No, I enjoyed the distraction from singing and touring. I find the social aspect of the horse industry, meeting people and being out in the fresh air to be addictive.

What happened next?

My next horse was a “point to point” racing horse – this form of racing is popular in Ireland. I like the idea of this racing because jumping equalizes the field. The horses are very talented but more affordable to own. This particular horse was fun to watch and he covered his costs which is always nice too.

It sounds like you thoroughly enjoy horses from a variety of aspects; owning, watching and getting to know people in the business.

Yes. In some ways I’ve learned that horses are similar to singers. A horse can look like a champion but unless they have the training and heart, they probably won’t go far. The same can be said about a singer… they can look the part but unless they have the training and heart they probably won’t make a career of it!

Country Singer/Songwriter Joanna Smith Talks Horses With Equine VIP

December 28, 2011 by EquineVIP

Country music songwriter/singer, Joanna Smith, grew up in a part of the country known for farming, Georgia red clay and family values. Joanna got the performance bug from listening to strong women of country including The Judds, Reba McEntire, and Dolly Parton. Smith decided to head to Nashville and pursue her music full-time. With no connections and in a new city, she set out writing and singing demos, and in a little over a year signed her first publishing deal. Since then, she has had two songs cut (“Flying By” on Billy Ray Cyrus’ latest record, HOME AT LAST), and has opened for Glen Campbell Don’t miss her latest CD “Georgia Mud” – this saucy girl with the Southern twang is destined to realize her dream of playing on radios for country crowds.

WHEN DID YOU START RIDING? CAN YOU SHARE A SPECIFIC MEMORY?

I think I was four or five when my daddy bought our first horse for the farm…. a bay quarter horse named Doc that he was going to work cows with. I remember I stood up on the tailgate of his truck so he could hoist me up behind the saddle so I could ride with him. I thought it was the best thing in the world.

YOU ARE EXTREMELY BUSY, HOW DO YOU FIND TIME TO RIDE?

I really have to make an effort! I try to ride whenever I make it home to Georgia!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT HORSE?

All of “my” horses are at home on our farm, Cherokee Rose Ranch. The one I’ve been riding lately is a three-year-old gelding named Jack. He’s great, but very green! We are both learning lots whenever we go for a ride.

HAS THE WESTERN LIFESTYLE INSPIRED YOUR SINGING OR SONGWRITING?

HUGELY! It’s my favorite imagery to use in songs. Actually, my favorite song in my catalogue is called “Wyoming”. I wrote it on my first trip out West. It’s a heartbreak story about a girl who lost the love of her life to the West.

HAVE YOU HAD ANY MENTORS/TRAINERS THAT STAND OUT IN YOUR MIND?

My dad taught me to ride, and taught me to respect horses. He grew up riding and is a very natural horseman. Also, Peggy Weldon. When I was in school at Auburn University, my favorite thing to do was go out to her farm and have her teach me to ride English, give me basics of dressage, and even coach me on how to jump! It was a blast, but regrettably shortlived because I left Auburn for Nashville after only one year.

YOU ARE USED TO PERFORMING BUT DOES RIDING MAKE YOU NERVOUS?

My daddy taught me early on that although fun, horses are animals you must respect, and they can be very dangerous. I’ve had some bad experiences through the years that have left me a little jumpy at times, but it usually wears off after being horseback for a few minutes. Riding is one my favorite life experiences, and I dream of owning a buckskin horse that I can ride whenever and wherever one day!!

Grammy Award Singer/Songwriter Mary Ann Kennedy Talks About Her Love of Horses

December 7, 2011 by EquineVIP

Grammy Award nominated singer/songwriter Mary Ann Kennedy has worked with some amazing music icons including Emmylou Harris, Faith Hill, LeAnn Rimes, Martina McBride, Garth Brooks and Sting. As far back as she can recall, music and horses have been a part of her world. Mary Ann’s career hasn’t slowed down
but her passion for all animals has truly been a reward to her fans. Some of her recent music
include “The Trail Less Traveled”, “Hoofbeats,Heartbeats and Wings”, “Who Saved Who” and
“The Rhythm of the Ride” which was inspired by Natural Horsemanship.

We always start our interview at the beginning…the beginning of knowing a horse! Tell us how your passion for horses first started?
I’ve always had two passions; music and horses, and that has never changed. I am originally from Muskego, Wisconsin and my Mother was very musical. We started playing at county fairs. If I wasn’t singing and playing guitar, making up songs or practicing with my cousin, Randy, for our family band “The Country
Cousins”, I was running around with the animals and riding: first ponies, then horses. I always felt blessed to have been born with such passionate interests. I never had to “wonder” or search for my
bliss. I’m grateful for that!

Any “first horse” stories you can share?
Since I started performing at a young age, I was able to save some money. When I was 12, I begged for my own horse. My Mother grew up on a farm so she understood. Looking back, owning a horse was the “pull and grounding” that I came to recognize as my truth. Life on the road is not easy and is very demanding. I traveled months at a time and always was drawn back to my animals. Later, with the success of being a singer and songwriter, it would always be important for me to balance the two passions.

Your first solo CD “The Trail Less Traveled” was inspired after losing 2 of your animal soul mates;Tonka, a black & white Tennessee Walking horse, and your dog Choy. Can you describe that period
of your life and why you were moved to write an entire CD about these special animals?

My musical partner, Pam Rose, and I had the wonderful opportunity to join Emmylou Harris as her harmony singers. The sound we developed came to be known as Kennedy-Rose, and we were fortunate enough to be heard by Sting. He signed us to his Pangaea record label where we wrote and produced 2 CDs and toured with him. It was during this time that I dreamed of making music for horse lovers. After the 8 week tour with Sting, I came home to meet Tonka, my 2 day-old newborn colt I raised. When Tonka and Choy
passed within 4 days of each other, through my grief, losing them inspired a whole new musical
chapter in my life. Death and rebirth, the circle of life… it is amazing and I continue to be grateful.

You and Emmylou Harris share a compassion for dogs and dog rescue. On your website Ms. Harris offers a testament for your music and says, “We share a passion for music, and have been fortunate enough
to make our “living” at it. But, we also share another passion, a deep love for animals, all
animals and especially the ones who have graced our lives by their presence in our lives. Thanks to Mary Ann, we now have a soundtrack for the journey.”

Emmylou is a legend and a heroine of mine. When Pam Rose and I first auditioned as Emmylou’s back-up singers, I just knew we would get the job! She auditioned hundreds of singers but we had been influenced by her music, so I knew she would respond to our audition. That was the beginning of our long 25 year old friendship. We’ve done some heavy touring together, and share a love for all animals. Emmylou and I know
that through the love of our animals – we know about unconditional love. Emmylou dedicated a song on her last CD to “Bella”, her big black dog.

You have continued to write music for animals lovers, so you must continue to be inspired?
I am inspired everyday by little girls wanting their first horse, by blue heeler dogs who we love
– but they drive us crazy! I believe people who love horses are of the same “tribe” and are all
kindred spirits.

You wrote the song “Rhythm of the Ride” – the theme song for Road to The Horse. How did that come together?
The song is the journey inspired by Natural Horsemanship and taught by gifted horsemen like Ray Hunt, Pat Parelli and Buck Brannaman. They teach the language of the horse. I called Kate Riordan who worked for Pat Parelli and told her about The Trail Less Traveled and Pat said he would listen to it. I wasn’t sure if he was familiar with my work so I told him I was a professional music artist and wanted to share the song. Since no one had done anything like this before, I have to thank many professionals in the horse business who were moved by my music enough to get the ball rolling. Along the way, my relationship with
the Parelli’s grew and our friendship developed. In 2010,Tootie Bland asked me to perform At ROAD TO THE HORSE, and also asked me to write a theme song for the ROAD. I did and performed that on the 2011 ROAD. It will be on my forthcoming 2011 Holiday CD release, entitled THIS LOVE OF HORSES.

Tell us about any special horses in your life now?
I was blessed to own a horse named Rio, who just passed away this summer. He taught me so much. I trim all of my 9 horses and learned a lot more, thanks to Rio. He truly helped me understand “the horse” from the inside out. Rio is on the cover of my CD “Hoofbeats, Heartbeats and Wings”. He was a grey horse who developed cancer melanomas. The tumors grew fast and changed his sweet personality. I think about him
all the time – how much he meant to me and how much he taught me.

Your many CD’s are available on your website www.maryannkennedy.com with a portion of the proceeds going to various rescue groups.
I really enjoy writing music with a purpose – whether I am inspired by a horse or a unique performer! I hope my gift of music will also be a gift you can share with all of your friends, not just your horse loving friends. It’s the perfect gift for anyone who has 4 legged family members!
